NIT Srinagar to host Instructional School for Teachers on PDEs, flow dynamics from June 29

NCM-funded programme to bring experts from IIT Jammu, IIT Kanpur and IIT Mandi

Srinagar, June 4: The Department of Mathematics at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar will organise a two-week Instructional School for Teachers on “Theoretical and Numerical Aspects of PDEs: Application to Flow Dynamics” from June 29 to July 11, 2026, bringing together leading experts and academicians from premier institutions across the country.

The programme is being funded by the National Centre for Mathematics (NCM), a joint centre of IIT Bombay and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, under its prestigious Advanced Training in Mathematics (ATM) Schools initiative.

The school will be held at the NIT Srinagar campus in Hazratbal and aims to enhance understanding of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), their theoretical foundations, numerical solution techniques, and applications in complex fluid dynamics.

Convenor of the programme, Dr. Atendra Kumar, said the instructional school has been designed to provide participants with a comprehensive exposure to both classical and modern approaches in the theory and computation of PDEs.

“Many physical phenomena and engineering problems are governed by Partial Differential Equations. The programme will cover topics ranging from the existence, uniqueness, and stability of solutions to advanced computational modelling techniques used in fluid dynamics and engineering applications,” he said.

In his message, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, said the Institute remains committed to fostering a vibrant academic ecosystem through high-quality national and international programmes.

” NCM-funded Instructional School reflects NIT Srinagar’s growing academic standing and its commitment to advancing research and capacity building in mathematical sciences. It will provide a unique platform for teachers, researchers, and scholars to engage with leading experts and explore contemporary developments in Partial Differential Equations and computational fluid dynamics,” he added.

Prof. Atikur Rahman, Registrar, NIT Srinagar, said the institute is making sustained efforts to create opportunities for academic excellence and professional development.

“We are pleased to host this prestigious instructional school under the ATM initiative of the National Centre for Mathematics. Such programmes play a vital role in strengthening academic networks and enhancing research capabilities among faculty members and young researchers,” he said.

Head Department of Mathematics, Dr. Zamrooda Jabeen described the programme as a significant milestone for the department.

“Partial Differential Equations form the backbone of modern scientific computing and mathematical modelling. This instructional school has been carefully designed to bridge theoretical concepts with practical computational approaches and real-world applications in flow dynamics,” she said.

The instructional school will feature lectures and interactive sessions by eminent faculty members from premier institutions, including IIT Kanpur, IIT Mandi, and IIT Jammu. Participants will be introduced to classical theories of second-order PDEs as well as modern numerical techniques such as finite difference and finite element methods.

A key focus of the programme will be the study of flow dynamics and structural bifurcation analysis, particularly in understanding recirculation zones and vortex shedding phenomena associated with fluid flow past bluff bodies. Experts will also discuss topological approaches for accurately determining the location and timing of structural bifurcations in complex flow systems.

According to the organisers, the curriculum has been carefully structured to provide participants with exposure to topics that are increasingly becoming an integral part of university and postgraduate mathematics programmes, while also addressing contemporary challenges in scientific computing and engineering research.

The organisers described the approval of the school under the NCM-ATM programme as a significant achievement for the institute and acknowledged the support extended by the NIT Srinagar administration.

They expressed gratitude to the Director, Registrar, and Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Zamrooda Jabeen, for her encouragement and administrative assistance during the proposal and approval process.

The programme is expected to attract teachers, researchers, and scholars from various institutions across the country and is being seen as a major academic initiative for the region.

In addition to providing advanced training opportunities, the event is expected to strengthen research collaborations and academic networking among participants.
