KU organises comprehensive health & genomics diagnostic-cum-awareness programme

Srinagar, June 11: The Department of Clinical Biochemistry, University of Kashmir (KU)  in collaboration with the University Health Centre and Meem Path Laboratory, J&K, organised a “Comprehensive Health and Genomics: Diagnostic-cum-Awareness Programme” at the University’s Main Campus on Thursday.

The programme aimed to promote preventive healthcare, timely disease detection and awareness about emerging advances in genomics and precision medicine.

Students, scholars, faculty members, employees and healthcare professionals participated in the event.

As part of the programme, a free diagnostic health camp was organised at the Department’s Diagnostic Centre, where participants availed a Basic Health Pack comprising Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Complete Blood Count (CBC), Liver Function Tests (LFT), Kidney Function Tests (KFT), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Lipid Profile investigations.

In her message, Vice Chancellor, KU Prof. Nilofer Khan, said such initiatives play an important role in promoting health awareness and preventive healthcare among the people.

Prof. Khan emphasised that universities must actively engage with society through outreach programmes and community-based initiatives.

She noted that dissemination of scientific knowledge and access to healthcare services are essential components of the University’s social responsibility.

The programme was inaugurated by Registrar, KU Prof. Naseer Iqbal, who highlighted the importance of health awareness programmes and their benefits for students, scholars and employees. He said such initiatives help connect university research and expertise with the wider community.

Dean, School of Biological Sciences KU Prof. Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, said  that awareness and early diagnosis are key to reducing the burden of disease and improving public health outcomes.

Director, Meem Path Laboratory, J&K, Dr. Inara Abeer, highlighted the growing role of advanced diagnostics and next-generation genome sequencing in healthcare. She said emerging technologies are transforming disease detection and clinical decision-making.

Earlier, Head, Department of Clinical Biochemistry KU Dr. Tanveer Ali Dar, welcomed the participants and highlighted the department’s evolution from a teaching and research centre to an institution actively engaged in community outreach and public service.

The programme featured expert lectures by Dr. Khursheed A. Bhat, Dr. Inara Abeer and Dr. Mahua Das Gupta.

Specialist consultations were provided by Dr. Khursheed A. Bhat (Endocrinology), Dr. Ibreez Rakshan (Orthopaedics), Dr. Inara Abeer (Pathology) and Dr. Ambreen (Physiotherapy).

The proceedings of the inaugural session were conducted by Ms. Beenish  whileas Prof. Fouzia Rashid faculty member Dept of Clinical Biochemistry proposed vote of thanks on the occassion.
