CJI Surya Kant Backs ‘Swadeshi Jurisprudence’, Says AI Should Support Judges, Not Replace Them

Calls for Indigenous AI Ecosystem Aligned with Constitutional Values and Judicial Independence

New Delhi, June 8 : Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has asserted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) should function as a supportive tool for the judiciary and not as a substitute for judicial reasoning, emphasizing the need to preserve human judgment and constitutional principles in the administration of justice.

Addressing the Oxford Union and the Oxford Law Society on the theme “Constitutional Promise to Digital Reality: Safeguarding Justice in the Age of AI and Technological Advancement,” the Chief Justice highlighted the Indian judiciary’s vision of embracing technology while safeguarding judicial independence.

CJI Surya Kant said the Supreme Court has consciously integrated technology into judicial processes as an aid to decision-making, ensuring that human wisdom and constitutional values remain at the core of justice delivery.

Advocating the concept of “Swadeshi Jurisprudence,” he stressed that India must develop a legal and technological framework rooted in its own constitutional ethos, institutional realities, linguistic diversity, and socio-cultural landscape rather than relying solely on imported technological models.

The Chief Justice also revealed that significant efforts are underway to explore the development of an indigenous AI ecosystem for the Indian judiciary. He said the initiative aims to enhance access to justice, improve efficiency, and strengthen judicial services while remaining consistent with India’s democratic traditions and legal foundations.

His remarks come amid growing global discussions on the integration of AI in judicial systems, with India seeking to strike a balance between technological innovation and the protection of constitutional safeguards, transparency, and human-centered justice.(KNC)
