BANDIPORA, OCTOBER 19: As part of its continued efforts to promote emerging aquatic crops and diversify agricultural livelihoods in Kashmir, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Bandipora-1, SKUAST-Kashmir, organised the fourth farmer training programme on Makhana cultivation under the Central Sector Scheme on Development of Makhana, in collaboration with the Department of Rakhs and Farms, Kashmir.

The training brought farmers and farm women into direct interaction with agricultural experts, focusing on the practical aspects of Makhana production and its prospects as an alternative income-generating enterprise.

Head, KVK Bandipora-1, Dr. Tariq Sultan, explained the cultivation requirements, production techniques, crop management, harvesting methods and possibilities for processing and value addition.

Assistant Director, Department of Rakhs and Farms, Kashmir, Feroz Ahmad Shapoo outlined departmental initiatives aimed at expanding Makhana cultivation in the region.

Addressing the participants, Scientists from KVK Bandipora-1, discussed the nutritional and commercial importance of Makhana. They highlighted the increasing relevance of this nutrient-rich food crop and encouraged farmers to explore its cultivation as a means of diversifying farm activities and tapping emerging market opportunities.

A key component of the programme was the field visit to the aquatic crop demonstration and experimental plots at the KVK farm. Participants observed ongoing trials of Makhana, lotus and water chestnut and interacted with scientists regarding their cultivation requirements, crop establishment and adaptability to the local environment.

The training concluded with an emphasis on translating scientific knowledge into field-level adoption and enterprise development.
